I am a queer white settler. I have expertise working with folks of diverse sexual orientations, genders, and relationship structures. Many of my clients are neuroatypical or have complex mental health histories. I practice from an anti-oppression, intersectional, trauma-informed lens which centers the impact of systemic oppression and lived discrimination.
I only see individual, adult (18+) clients, and do not practice couples or family therapy.
Therapeutic Approach: I aim to build a warm, trusting relationship where sessions feel like a conversation. I hope to help you feel understood and to better understand yourself, while developing your skills to shift unhelpful or harmful patterns. Expect gentle challenge out of your comfort zone to create new awareness and change - while being supported to make this tough work possible. I use research-supported strategies and draw from different approaches to fit your needs and resources (both time and financial).
I use a combination of interpersonal process (talking through patterns and situations to give you a different perspective), more concrete Cognitive Behaviour methods (working with thoughts, feelings, and behaviours) or Dialectical Behaviour skills (which focus on regulating emotions and tolerating distress). Homework assignments are most often used gather data to give us a better picture of your difficulties or to shift behaviour. We may also use Mindfulness – in a personalized, adapted way.
For issues related to trauma, I often use cognitive processing therapy (CPT). It is a structured, short term treatment that is evidence-supported for the treatment of PTSD and associated symptoms.
Credentials and Training: I am a Registered Psychologist (CHCPBC#2414) regulated by the College of Health and Caring Professionals of BC. I have a Psy.D. degree in clinical psychology from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. My training program was developmental (across the lifespan including disorders of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood). My doctoral research examined the impact of low barrier mindfulness practice on mental health. I completed training rotations in clinical sexology, inpatient psychiatric care, outpatient care, and community psychology.
Other Work Settings: Prior to this location, I was part of West Coast Centre for Sex Therapy, where I provided treatment related to issues of sexual and gender identity, trauma, managing problematic sexual behaviour, and building healthy relationships with sexuality.
I also work as an inpatient forensic psychologist (with the BC Mental Health and Substance Use service), assessing and treating complex difficulties related to substance use, psychosis, personality, mood, and anxiety disorders, and effective functioning in relationships.
As per college regulations, I am limited to seeing residents of BC who are physically located in BC.
